BSMA Finals 2009

The BSMA Finals 2009 were hosted by Cotswold Club at the perfectly prepared Foxhill Moto Parc, supported by the BSMA management team.

Competition throughout all groups was brilliant as you would expect at this event.

Open class were first away with Sebastian Osbourne giving an exhibition on the big hills more suited to alpine ski-jumping. He gained the first maximum of the weekend. Marc Gunter added to the excitement, but a big off in race 2 spoiled his chances. He remounted to salvage some points but, on borrowed machinery, he was never able to challenge the winner. Dexter Marks, always on the pace with three runner up spots, finished a clear second with Nigel Kibble a confident third ahead of Tom Bennett, Marc Gunter and Ashley Watt.

AMX competition was red hot with more riders chasing the top positions. Adam Cook worked hard in every race and once in front looked unstoppable. He had 3 brilliant wins and then disaster in race 4, when leading at half way he suffered a rear wheel puncture, which seemed to ruin his chances, scoring just 25 points, with the win going to Darren Banwell. However, he bounced back to take the final moto in fine style after passing Banwell. It was now left to Ricky Lethaby who was the only person who could take the title from Cook. His chances were spoilt by James Cole, who saved his best race until last with a great second position. This left Cook and Lethaby equal on points with the verdict going to Cook. Just behind in third was Darren Banwell with Craig Badman, James Cole and Richard Williams completing the top six. Mark Young was impressive as usual but a last place in heat 5 relegated him to 7th overall.

Seniors was probably the most competitive group with excellent racing for all 15 trophy positions. The final result was in doubt until a last heat decider. Jansen Day finished runner up to Shaun Springer, which was just enough to take the title by a single point from a consistent Jake Hassell, with Luke Dean just 2 points behind in third. A poor start in the final race spoilt his chances after a hard fought win in race 4 had put him in real contention for the overall title. Jansen Day recorded two race wins, with Shaun Springer taking the first and last races of the weekend, but having two disasters in between, losing his rad cap in race 2 and suffering a front wheel puncture in race 3. Just what you don’t need on the jumps and drop-offs at Foxhill. I’m sure we’ll see more of this young rider. Ross Clarke, after a good first day, disappointed on day 2 to finish 4th overall, with Charles Statt and Liam Wright finishing on equal points in 5th and 6th.

In Big Wheel 85cc Jordan Divall was a deserving champion with 4 race wins. He started well, hole-shotting most races but he was fiercely challenged by Bradley Wheeler, the winner of race 2 and a close 2nd on three occasions. Maybe with better starts the result could have been closer. Lewis Dowsett nearly lost his podium finish with an 8th spot in the final race. He just edged out Jack Timms by 1 point, with Rickie Roderick and Jack Gardner, who took an excellent 3rd in the final race, finishing 5th and 6th respectively.

Small Wheel 85 pilot Curtis Blamey started his weekend with two wins on day 1 and, with another on day 2, took 1st overall. He was made to work hard by Jordan Batchelor, who took the other two races. These two riders dominated the group, with just 2 points separating them at the end. There was a real battle behind, with the next three riders all having one bad result. Mitchell Lewis was a deserving third with four top 3 finishes, with Jack Wilson 2 points ahead of Michael Burfield, and Harry Sherman in 6th.

Junior rider Callum Heasman was the only other rider to gain a maximum over the weekend and, once in front, was a clear winner. Henry Williams looked the best opposition with three runner up spots, but two poor races dropped him to 7th overall. Consistent riding and good starts gave Tommie Schofield a clear second overall. Dion Lewis and Corey Coombes battled hard for 3rd and 4th respectively, with Sam Williams clear in 5th ahead of William Pountney.

BSMA management wish to congratulate all the riders for their efforts over the weekend whatever position they achieved, and to Cotswold Club for hosting the event and to the track management team for providing us with such an impressive venue. Thank you all.
