The BSMA Doodson National Championship Finals 2011 were held on the 13th and 14th August at Little Silver Moto Parc near Exeter in Devon.

The event was the climax of the season for many of the BSMA members and was run at this superb facility managed by Robin Griffiths and his team. With a full BSMA Series Management team also in attendance the event will be remembered as one of the best finals run for many years.

The Open class started proceedings with Portsmouth rider Dexter Marks dominating the group. Danny Iles his club mate holeshoting the opening heat but once Marks took the lead he was never headed. Mathew Thomas was always close behind. Heat two followed the same pattern. The final heat of day one saw Ashley Thomas taking a fantastic win after passing Marks and holeshot man Iles having failed to deliver what the spectators had expected in the previous heats.

A crash in heat four for Thomas while trying to pass Iles allowed Marks to take another win. The final encounter saw Thomas out in front once he had passed Iles with Sam Harvey third. Marks with the points in the bag took no chances to come home fifth and secure the overall National Champion Title from Ashley Thomas, consistent Mathew Thomas, holeshot man Danny Iles with George Purchase and Joe Cundle completing the top six.

The AMX were the next group to the start line with some of the most competitive and eventful racing coming from this group. Arron Jenner from East Kent took the overall and took two heat wins during the weekend and was never likely to be lower than second. Coventry rider Sebastian Osbourne, the man to beat, took a win and second in the opening heats which set up a third heat decider to secure the overnight leadership. Osvourne battled through the pack with Jenner in close attendance at half distance but with only a lap to go Osbourne stalled and took forever for the bike to fire back into life. This gave Jenner the win and Osbourne only able to come home a distant eighth.

Even with two wins on the second day for Osbourne the title of National Champion went to Jenner with second and third finishes on day two. There was some superb racing behind the leaders with Coventry rider Chuck Davies just edging out Rob Muscat of Portsmouth by two points to take the final podium position. Mathew Allen was safe in fifth with Paul Wildman Willis a creditable sixth on the 125cc Yamaha in this very competitive group.

Senior rider Dan Thornhill of Coventry took the only maximum of the weekend on his 125cc Suzuki who had to work hard to get to the front of the pack. However, once there he was never headed. Fast starting Ryan Fellows of East Kent, on the 250cc Suzuki, taking four holeshots, always looked likely to finish on the podium. The final heat was his only poor start, which allowed Thornhill a gate to flag victory, but Fellows battled through to finish fourth.

The battle behind was immense with Sion Talbot, Corsham, taking third from Ryan Butler, Ringwood, on count back after finishing level on points after five heats. A last heat error by Chris Grindle spoiled his chances of finishing on the podium. Jonathan Cole took the final top six position after finishing level with Mitchell Bligh due to his third place finish in heat one.

The Big Wheel 85cc group was dominated by Cornwall rider Josh Gilbert who recorded four heat wins. However problems early in heat four left Gilbert to battle through the pack. Despite passing Robert Yates, Cotswold, and chasing down Josh Coleman, Portsmouth, he was unable to pass for the win. A runaway win in the final heat completed the weekend for Gilbert.

The battle for runner up spot went down to the wire with Coleman just securing second from Suzuki mounted Yates. Corsham rider Tyron Cleaver started the weekend with a nightmare heat one having suffered both a puncture and clutch problems but three excellent rides secured fourth overall from Dean Symons, Cornwall. A group of Cotswold riders filled the next positions with Jack Briddle finishing ahead of Jack French and Ryan Deacon.

The Small Wheel 85cc group provided some of the best racing of the weekend with the top two riders finishing level on points. The overall going to Michael Ellis of Portsmouth after taking a win in the final heat. Consistency nearly paid out for Henry Williams, Cotswold, who recorded a win and three runner up finishes to finish second having tied on points for the overall. Having battled hard with Williams, third went to Cornwall rider, Jack Roberts. A mistake in the final heat almost let Alex Walton, Rhayader, to take third but some determined riding by Roberts gave him third by a single point at the finish line. Tommie Schofield was always in the hunt and took a deserved win in heat four. The top six was completed by Cornwall rider Joe Elffert who was just unable to catch the leaders despite finishing strongly.

The Junior Group was dominated by Cotswold rider Jayden Murphy who looked set to record three heat wins on day one but lost the front end on a dusty corner whilst well in front and remounted to finish a close third. The second day went to play with Murphy recording two gate to flag victories. Brooklyn Evans, Cotswold, started the meeting looking likely to finish at least runner up but an improving Ryan Rowlands, Rhayader, look likely to steal second away from Evans following a heat win and a second place finish. However, Evans finished well clear in the final encounter with Rowland forced to come back thorough the pack of almost forty riders but came up just short and finished a safe third overall just two points off runner up spot. Gary Ashley improved over the weekend to finish forth overall following a last heat second with Louis Thomas and Jamie Evans completing the top six.

A full line up of Automatics competed on a shortened track with pre race favourite James Hyatt starting his weekend with a poor fifth position. However the Cotswold rider resumed normal service thereafter and returned four clean wins. Jack Scally of Corsham also opened his account with a poor eighth positions but then recorded three seconds and a third to finish a safe second overall. The final podium position was secured by Liam Gale of Cotswold with second and third place finishes in his final outings. The loser in the final heat was Toby Potter of Corsham who had looked safe for overall third but a poor final heat dropped him to fourth. The top six was rounded out by Ike carter, East Kent and Liam Brosnan, Portsmouth. Louie Kessell started his weekend well with a win and a third place but a third race DNF relegated him to seventh overall.

The BSMA Race Management Team would like to thank our main sponsors, Doodson Motorsport Insurance, the BSMA clubs for hosting the semi finals, the Little Silver Moto Parc Team, Medical Care Team, Sound system providers and of course the riders and their teams for providing such entertaining racing.

The next BSMA Event will be the final round of the GT Series at Culham Parc near Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Please check with the BSMA office as there may be some spaces available.

This event will be special and should not be missed.
